UPDATED: Trees, power lines knocked down in West Kootenay

High winds have caused havoc around the West Kootenay this afternoon.

Hundreds are people are without power around Nelson, in the Slocan Valley, and on the north and east shores of Kootenay Lake.

Nelson Hydro says it’s working on restoring electricity to large blocks of customers, but they’re just now starting to get a handle on the full extent of the damage.

It has been off and on in Nelson.

Some people will probably be in the dark for several more hours.

We spoke with Nelson Hydro general manager Alex Love between outages.

Meanwhile, part of a tree came down in the 600 block of Baker Street, narrowly missing a car (pictured above and below).
