Man hospitalised after avalanche

An avalanche Thursday near Whitewater Resort has sent one skier to hospital.

Three men were skiing a back-country route near the resort.

Whitewater spokesman Kirk Jensen says the area the skiers were in is considered risky.

Vernon search and rescue were called to the area as they were the only available SAR crew in the province with a winch to deploy from their helicopter.

The man was airlifted to Kootenay-Boundary Regional Hospital in Trail – he had several injuries including a broken femur, broken ribs and a back injury.
