Phone scammer use spoofing technology to pose as RCMP officer

NELSON, B.C. – Police warm the public to be vigilant after a Nelson woman has received a call from a scammer pretending to be from the RCMP.

The warning comes after a Nelson woman was asked for money over the phone by a man claiming to be from the RCMP.
The woman got suspicious and hung up.
According to a news release the caller used so-called “spoofing”-technology, masking their own number, manipulating the display of the phone receiving the call to show that it is the RCMP.
“Members of the RCMP will never contact individuals for the purpose of collecting fines or taxes. These scammers are targeting people with the intent to scare them into complying with their demands” said Assistant Sergeant Brett Turner with RCMP.
He encourages anyone who receives these calls to contact the RCMP or the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre.
