You never want to have to fine people to get them to do the right thing.
This from Nelson’s City Manager Kevin Cormack with council voting to end the downtown dog ban.
There will be hefty fines for offenders and by-law officers will be monitoring things.
But Cormack suggests this enforcement system should not be seen as some sort of the cure-all.
Next month council is expected to vote into law a new leashed zone for Baker and Vernon Streets.
Cormack is asking the community to respect that the ban remains in place until then.
The city of Nelson can and does impound dogs. They have a contract with a local kennel. But Cormack says this sort of action would be the last resort.
