Teck starts work on contaminated water treatment plant

Teck Trail Operations is to start building the plant that will treat contaminated groundwater that leached from the site pre- 1980’s.

The $40 million facility will process the groundwater that has gone under Teck, the river and across to a part of East Trail.

Community Relations Leader Catherine Adair says two interceptor wells already exist next to the river.

The contaminated groundwater contains ammonia , sulphate and some metals.

The treatment plant should be ready for the summer of 2016.

Three monitoring wells will also be drilled this spring in East Trail starting later this month.
