Nelson softens stance in shared recreation dispute

The city of Nelson has softened its position on the regional recreation dispute…but with conditions.

It will put a $184,000 annual grant it withdrew from shared recreation into the Nelson and District Community Complex reserve fund.

But it will take that money back again if a review of a new funding model with taxpayers in Area F and part of E – and potentially others- isn’t completed by late 2016.

The two regional partners had voiced their unhappiness about things and Nelson mayor Deb Kozak says the Queen City has backed down.

Kozak says Nelson’s initial move was always about prompting the tough conversation.

If the rural partners accept this latest offer there would be no extra tax implication for any residents in the three partnership areas regarding the normal annual funding of the NDCC.
