BC Housing unveils name for new Nelson supportive housing project

BC Housing has officially named its new supportive housing development at 45 Government Road Elephant Mountain Place as the 43-unit project moves toward opening this fall.

The name was unveiled during Tuesday’s Nelson council meeting, where BC Housing representatives Tyler Baker and Cheryl Roepke provided a project update.

“We will be opening later this summer a new supportive housing project at 45 Government Road, which is called Elephant Mountain Place,” Baker said.

“We’re very proud of that. We just went by it today. It looks great. There’s a city sponsored mural on the side of the building, which really looks great. I think that will be a real asset to the community once it’s opened.”

He also said renovations are beginning at the North Shore Inn to improve the supportive housing units already operating there.

“We’re also commencing renovations on the North Shore Inn. That will renovate the existing building to provide longer-term stability to those units and ensure that they can continue to provide the supportive services that are there for the people who are living there in Nelson,” he said.

Elephant Mountain Place will provide 43 studio homes with around-the-clock supports. Nelson CARES Society will operate the project.

Baker said Nelson has made significant progress in housing development across the housing continuum through collaboration among governments and community partners.

“The housing continuum in Nelson is fairly complete. We know that there remain challenges identified in your employee time count and your housing investment. But there is progress being made all across the housing spectrum,” he said.

According to BC Housing, as of March it funds 17 shelter beds in Nelson, 49 supportive housing units for people at risk of homelessness, 42 supportive homes for seniors, eight transition housing spaces for people fleeing family violence, 236 social housing units for seniors and families and more than 200 rent supplements to help households remain in private-market housing.
