Charges laid in Crawford Bay cheetah case

Two people have been charged in connection with the cheetah seen running loose at Crawford Bay last year.

Earl Pfeifer and Carol Plato each face one count of possession of an alien species without a permit.

They’ll appear in Creston court Feb. 17. The charges were sworn Dec. 16, one day short of the one-year anniversary of the cheetah sighting.

The pair originally wanted to bring two African cheetahs to Kaslo in 2013 but the plan fell through, despite the blessing of village council.

Conservation officers searched for the animal, which was spotted along Highway 3A in December 2015, but couldn’t find it. It was wearing a collar.
