BC SPCA is pushing for a national ban on fur farming in an online petition.
In a release, they say a petition has been launched calling for a Canada-wide ban on fur farming all species of animals.
Fur farms raise animals in small cages what will be killed for their fur, which is then sold t international markets for the luxury fashion industry.
The BC SPCA says hundreds of thousands of animals are farmed for fur each year, with minks and foxes being the most common animals for fur farming.
They say the practice needs to end because of welfare concerns, health risks, respect to Indigenous values, and public opinion.
“Wild animals have complex needs that cannot be met on fur farms. These are not domesticated animals but wild animals born into unnatural and inhumane conditions,” said BC SPCA.
“Fur farms are transmission grounds for dangerous infectious diseases, including Avian influenza and COVID-19. These outbreaks pose serious risks to surrounding communities. Fur farming conflicts with Indigenous perspectives on animal treatment and environmental stewardship.”
When it comes to fur farming, they add 78 percent of Canadians oppose the practice.
BC banned mink farms in 2021, making it the only province to do so.
