BC Wineries allowed to sell directly to Albertan consumers starting this week

Albertans can now access British Columbian wines directly from our province’s wineries.

In July, it was announced an agreement was reached between the two provinces to allow BC wineries to once again ship their products directly to Alberta consumers.

That deal took effect this week.

“I think this is a great news story for BC wineries in general and for the ability of Alberta residents to get great quality BC wines, including Northern Lights Estate Winery, right to their door, whenever they want it,” said Owner and Operator Doug Bell.

Bell adds there’s been plenty of demand for their products from our provincial neighbours.

“There are so many family members, there are people that lived in BC that now live in Alberta, there are people that vacation in British Columbia, so for a long time they’ve known about products like ours, and they just want access to them,” he said.

“However, the Alberta liquor system is a harder system to navigate because we are not local to that province, so there are many areas of Alberta that have not previously been able to access our wine, and with these changes they’re going to have easier access and ability to order the specific wines they want to wherever they are located.”

Bell added they’ve been expanding their ability to ship directly to consumers in Alberta, and have added almost 60 new liquor store locations in across Alberta.

BC Premier David Eby says he welcomes the new agreement with Alberta.

“We reached an agreement to collect taxes on behalf of the Alberta government here and remit them to Alberta, and that has resolved that trade dispute.” said Eby.

“We are doing work across the country to ensure that we’re reducing these barriers and ensuring that we’re trading as effectively as possible within Canada.”
