After a lengthy investigation a person has been charged for the fire at the Academy or Oriental Classical Sciences building in Nelson last year.
Police say a 19 year old man from Creston will appear in court next month.
The October fire started in the basement-storage area below the academy and two private residences.
It was deemed suspicious and the fire department says had someone not heard a smoke alarm the fire could have quickly swept through the old heritage site.
