It’s the first weekend of doggy freedom in Nelson’s downtown.
This week council formally adopted the bylaw changes that end the ban on dogs on Baker and Vernon Streets.
But they must be on a leash.
Councillor Anna Purcell says while many people in Nelson may not like the change but this is all about everyone doing the right thing.
The city will impose big fines for various dog-related infractions but there will be a monitoring period first and public education.
