Castlegar strike:city agrees to meet union Monday

There could be a breakthrough in the labour impasse in Castlegar.

The city has agreed to meet with its striking CUPE workers for mediated talks on Monday.

We asked Chief Administrative Officer John Malcolm if the impasse had reached a natural peak and now it’s time for both parties to sit down and talk?

This week’s Castlegar council meeting featured the most emotional comments from the union and their supporters so far.

The strike has been going for five weeks with job security language apparently a key sticking point.

The union had been calling for the city to return to the bargaining table but the city had refused saying it was the union who rejected a mediator offer.
