Ladybird speedboat to return to Hall Street Pier display by summer

The historic Ladybird speedboat should be re-installed in its temperature-controlled display case at Nelson’s Hall Street Pier by early June.

The boat was removed from its display in August 2024 due to temperature control issues. It has been in storage ever since.

The Ladybird was a historic speedboat that set speed records on Kootenay Lake in the 1920s. It is owned by the Nelson Museum, Archives, and Gallery.

Community Planning Manager Chris Johnson told Nelson City Council on April 1 that the display has strict, museum-grade requirements that still require some adjustments.

“We are continuing to work on refinements with the engineering design team to ensure that it meets the strict requirements of museum grade. But we’re very much looking to get the boat in there and have that building fully functioning by June.”

The Ladybird display was part of the $4.8-million Hall Street Pier project, which was completed in September 2024.
